Our Approach

Pilates with a clinical assessment

Clinical Pilates is not a class. Each session is one on one on the reformer, and the exercises are chosen from an assessment of how you move, what has been sore and what you want to get back to. Sessions progress as you get stronger, and they work alongside your osteopathy, physiotherapy or chiropractic care if you are seeing us for that too.

One body
A connected team

Your care does not have to happen in isolation. Clinical Pilates can work alongside the rest of the clinic when it is the right fit, so you get well-rounded, coordinated care.

The Things Worth Knowing

Clinical Pilates, without the mystery

Pilates based exercise is one of several good ways to build strength and control. What makes it clinical is the assessment and the way each session is adapted to you.

It is exercise, adapted to you

Research suggests structured exercise helps many people with ongoing back pain, and Pilates based exercise is one useful way to deliver it. Our lower back pain page explains how we combine exercise with hands-on care.

One on one means it fits

Private sessions mean the reformer is set up for your body, exercises are modified on the spot, and the program changes as you improve, whether you are recovering from injury, pregnant, postnatal or simply wanting to get stronger.

It works best as part of a plan

Clinical Pilates sits well alongside hands-on treatment and home exercise. Your practitioner can help you decide how often to come in and what to keep doing between sessions.

Before you book

Common questions about clinical Pilates at The Good Joint. For first visit details, see our new patient page.

Do I need Pilates experience?
No. Sessions start from where you are, whether you have never used a reformer or you already train regularly.
Is it a group class?
No. Clinical Pilates at The Good Joint is private and one on one, so the whole session is built around you.
Is clinical Pilates safe during pregnancy?
Many people continue to exercise during an uncomplicated pregnancy, and exercises can be adapted for each trimester. Let us know you are pregnant when you book, and check with your midwife or GP if you have any complications.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is needed. If you are already seeing one of our practitioners, they can suggest whether clinical Pilates would suit your plan.
Can I claim on my health fund?
This depends on your fund and level of cover, and on the practitioner taking your session. Ask your fund what applies to you, and see our fees, rebates and funding page.
What should I wear?
Comfortable, close fitting activewear you can move in, and grip socks if you have them. Bring a water bottle.
